Tom's Market Newsletter
Week of January 28-February 3, 2008

Good afternoon everyone,

Well, the time is here...of course we all know it's the SUPER BOWL this Sunday.... I mean we're in the beginning of the winter doldrums.  Yes, it's the time of year were the holidays are done, the cold seems colder, and everyone wants to hibernate until the Crocuses peek their heads out from the thawing tundra.

    Good news!!

Just so happens that the stars and planets have all lined up and all of us at Tom's Market have put together a sale that will combat those doldrums AND help the Patriots will the Super Bowl!!  (Well, maybe not help, but perhaps provide the fuel for the legions of fans to cheer at the top of their lungs).  From Prime Rib and Baked Stuffed Shrimp to Ribs, Hot Dogs, and our own Market Made Sausage, we'll have something for everyone's taste and budget.   Add some heat and eat wings, meatballs, (also on sale), and chili, and yours will be the best party on the block!!

Anybody have any of those snazzy sayings for the game..like "Bury the Bears" or "Squish the Fish"?  I'm having trouble finding anything that rhymes with "Giants"

Now for a peek at what the rest of our customers did last week and their plans for the big day.......

This is our plan for Superbowl Sunday.  There is a GREAT pub ......... where they have 22 brews on tap.  Not just the average run of the mill but Leatherlips, Loose Cannon, Dogfish, Smuttynose, and Lagunitas to name a few.  Not to mention the usual Guiness Stout and others.  In any event, they host a huge party where they rent a huge screen and the regulars bring in food.  This year we plan on bringing a fried turkey, pulled pork and short ribs!  I'm sure there will be a host of other gastronomical delights!  It will be a great time as always and plan on celebrating the win!  GO PATS!

Last Sunday we had Pomegranate Martinis, Chips and Shrimp Dip, Cheddar Goldfish, Torpedoes made from ground pepperoni & hamburger and assorted chocolates and fruit cake. Super bowl will be a little more elaborate with martinis, beer & wine, chicken wings .... Tacos, lasagne and salad in addition to the usual chips n dip type snacks, and some spectacular dessert like Millionaire Pie to celebrate

Superbowl Sunday for our family has no specific menu.  For the most part we never do any cooking! Although we aren't Mexican food eaters, you'll a good variety of food to choose from:  BBQ chicken wings & meatballs are not store bought.  Pizza, sandwiches, chinese, shrip, chips, sausage & peppers, and maybe a very small side dishes

I like pre game meals...last week I started with a little pepper oil in the pan added tomatoes some spices, 3 chicken lobsters, 2 # squid, 2# shrimps, 1# bay scallops and 1 doz. little necks....serve over angel hair pasta...unbelievable.....couldn't' put the fork down......best thing is, that I ate it for the next 2 days... best left overs on the planet....

....(my husband)... buys a can of nuts to eat during the game.  We all may stop in
on occasion to check the score but he pretty much watches alone.  Maybe some
of your other readers should have pity on him and invite him over for the
Super Bowl!!

    Can we help him?????

If there was a item that most of my customers love for the big game, it's chili.  Angelo will be making his special "Chili Grind" beef for the big game.  It is a courser texture than traditional hamburger, and really gives the chili a meaty backbone,  Make sure to order yours ahead of time at 1-401-826-0050 and we'll have it ready for you.

Two great Chili recipes from the 'Net and a customer
(You too can see your recipe in print...see info below...)

This is a classic American chili con carne recipe . No secret ingredients, special cooking techniques, or rare, heirloom beans. This very easy chili recipe features a lot of meat, some beans, and a whole lot of satisfying flavor.

Makes 12 large servings of Chili Con Carne

INGREDIENTS:
5 pounds ground chuck
1 large onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced
1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
3/4 cup chili powder
2 (10 oz) cans tomato sauce
1 (15 oz) can kidney beans, drained
1 1/2 tsp salt, or to taste
1 tsp black pepper
1 cup water
cayenne to taste

PREPARATION:
Put the beef in a large pot over med-high heat. Cook, while stirring to crumble the meat into small pieces, until browned. Drain off the grease. Add the onion, garlic, and bell peppers. Cook for about 3 minutes.

Put in the rest of the ingredients and simmer over low heat, uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 60 minutes. Taste for salt and spiciness, and serve hot.

You won't miss the meat in this great vegetarian chili recipe. This vegetable chili is healthy, (if you take out the cheese and sour cream...but hey...it's the Super Bowl!!)  delicious, and super fast to make.

Makes 8 Portions of Vegetable Chili

INGREDIENTS:
1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 (16 ounce) jar chunky-style salsa
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 (10 ounce) package frozen corn
1 cup diced green zucchini
2 teaspoon chili powder
salt to taste
cayenne pepper to taste
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup cilantro, chopped

PREPARATION:
Add the tomatoes, salsa, beans, corn, zucchini and chili powder into a saucepan. Bring to boil on medium-high heat, and taste for salt and pepper. Reduce heat to; simmer on low for 10 minutes. Serve topped with cheese, sour cream, and cilantro.

If you look at these recipes and look at the ingredients and the seasonings, you can probably come up with your own personal recipe.  Come on, let your hair down and give it a try!!  Let me know how you make out.  If I have more recipes that are submitted before the game, I'll do a special "CHILI EMAIL FLASH" and send it out to everyone.
Speaking of email flashes, let's make it a "CHILI/WINGS EMAIL FLASH"  send in those wing recipes as well and I'll make sure you have them in your in-box by Saturday!!  (I would be particularly interested in wing recipes that use odd ingredients like cola, ketchup, cumin, and other non-traditional flavors)

Ok...everyone break out their good luck charms, Patriots gear, and go thru the pre-game routine..(hey..more fodder for next weeks newsletter.  Or, better yet, email yours in and I'll include it with the email blast!!)

    Above all.

    GO PATS!!!!

Have a great week.  See you in the market!!
