Week of August 26-September 1, 2009
Good morning everyone,
As the song goes: ?where o where has my newsletter been, where o where can it be???
Good question!!
Well, really there is no excuse?except that we have been extremely busy this summer. It seems that even with the rain, people still wanted to make a summer of it. In addition, our catering division has been all over the state catering weddings, cocktail parties, birthday celebrations, etc. We?ve even been to South Boston, The Cape, New Haven, and just about every place in-between!! With our expanded list of services, our clients have come to depend on us for events and celebrations that will be remembered for a lifetime.
AND??
For those of you who haven?t heard yet, we will be opening our second location in Warren!! Yes my little market starved friends on the East Bay, we?ll be coming soon!! We will be setting up shop in the former Market at Cutler Mills at 137 Child Street. Our goal is to offer a carbon copy blueprint of what we do here in Coventry. So far, the response has been unbelievable, and we look forward to working with everyone to become a favorite shopping destination for the East Bay. Thank you to the town for all of the support, and to our future customers for emails and letters of support. Look for a mid-October opening. We will also be holding a job fair in the next two weeks. Look for a sign in the window and an advertisement on the local paper. We look forward to hiring locally both for staffing the market and with work that has to be done. If you see us working there, make sure you stop by and say hi!!
I would be remiss not to say a very belated thank you to Gail Ciampa for a great article over a month ago in the food section of the journal. Who says the newspaper is dead?I saw more people on the street that saw it and said how great the recipe was. I even had a conversation with a parent on a soccer field about it even before they knew who I was!! Kudos to David and Chris for a great dish!!
Have a great week. See you in the store!!

On a completely different note, we?ve discovered a wonderful website called the 3/50 Project that extols the virtues of shopping locally and actually backs its finding with real numbers. For example, for every $100 one spends at a locally owned, independent store, $68 of it finds its way back to the local economy. I?ve worked for locally owned businesses since I was in high school and shopped at them since I was old enough to make the choice and I?m proud that my support has helped to keep locally-owned businesses in my neighborhood. I have always shopped at independent stores because I appreciate the better service they provide and feel I have gotten higher quality and value as well. I always feel proud of my work at Tom?s when customers tell us how much they enjoy our selection and the freshness of our products ? I know that I had a personal impact on that customer and that my doing a good job makes a difference to them. Please feel free to check the website out for yourself http://www.the350project.net/home.html and continue to support the locally-owned businesses in your neck of the woods.
As I mentioned above, we are once again gearing our weekly specials to the enjoyment of the great outdoors (even if it is only out on your deck). Over in the deli we are offering Hillview American Cheese (presliced) for $1.99/lb to top your cheeseburgers and Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, and Coleslaw in the Grab-N-Go case for $1.99/lb to enjoy with those cheeseburgers. Christine in the Bakery will be popping out fresh-baked Parisienne bread for $1.99 each to tempt your grilling acumen. Nothing like bread drizzled with olive oil and grilled over hot coals to go with dinner!!. Over in the Meat Department, Angelo and his team have put together a mean selection of meats for your grill. Whole Beef Tenderloins for $6.99/lb - great for a crowd, Boneless Rib Eyes are $6.99/lb are perfect your friends, and NY Sirloin Steaks at $4.99/lb will impress that special crowd. For an unbeatable value, Ground Chuck is $1.99 lb for a family pack and chicken cutlets are $1.99 lb for a 10 lb bag. So fire up your grill and get ready for Summer (finally).
This week, I?d like to highlight another of TOM?S OWN products ? Tom?s Own Mesquite Steak Sauce ? and pair it with something we have on sale ? London Broil Steaks ($2.99/lb). London Broil Steaks have a wonderful flavor and can please the finickiest of eaters, but they have to be prepared correctly. They are generally not tender enough to eat as you would a rib-eye or t-bone, so before grilling them you should let them marinate. Here is a dish that is loads of fun to make and eat!
GRILLED STEAK FAJITAS
1 London Broil Steak (about 2lbs) juice of 2 limes
1 bottle Tom?s Own Mesquite Steak Sauce pinch of salt & pepper
2 onions 2 bell peppers
oil for cooking 12 tortillas
condiments ? salsa, sour cream, guacamole, hot sauce, jalapenos, etc.
Marinate the steak in the lime juice and Tom?s Own Mesquite Steak Sauce for at least 2 hours then season it with the salt & pepper on both sides and brush it with a bit of oil to keep it from sticking. Peel the onions and slice them into ?-inch rounds; cut the peppers into quarters and remove the seeds; toss them all in the marinade. Preheat the grill to high and grill the steak and the vegetables to your preferred doneness (I like the steak medium-rare and the vegetables a little crisp). Slice the steak across the grain into thin strips and the vegetables into bite-sized pieces and serve with the tortillas and condiments.
Have a wonderful, sunny, warm weekend and enjoy your grill!
Cheers,
David
